Hey, I'm Anatoly! Having touched the unique nature of Kamchatka for the first time in 2016, I still can't get away from it. In 2020 I'm sending a motorbike to Kamchatka and travelling there all summer. In 2022 again the motorbike is sent across Siberia to Kamchatka, where I spend another three months. Seems like enough for a peninsula with almost no roads, but in 2023 it's all over again! This book is a collection of stories about all the journeys in the Land of Volcanoes and Bears - the amazing Kamchatka Peninsula.
Kamchatka's low population density favours the preservation of pristine wildlife on the peninsula, which I dreamed of seeing. The main goal was to get on a motorbike to Kuril Lake, the largest concentration of brown bears in the world. The lake is the largest salmon spawning ground in the region, which is what attracts the bears. Kamchatka is one of the few places in the world where this animal can feel free. The estimated number of bears in Kamchatka is 20-30 thousand - approximately one bear per 10 people in Kamchatka.
When travelling around Kamchatka, you see cones of volcanoes everywhere. Volcanoes of the Pacific Ring of Fire protrude above forested valleys. There are several dozen active volcanoes and hundreds of extinct volcanoes in Kamchatka. I was lucky enough to get to a few of the hard-to-reach volcanoes and even get inside a few craters on my motorbike.
The name ‘Kamchatka’ is derived from the name of the peninsula's largest river. It carries its waters among the highest volcanoes of the continent to the Pacific Ocean. In addition to the open Pacific Ocean, the peninsula is washed by the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea. The goal of the trip was to visit all the coasts of Kamchatka and to reach Cape Africa, the easternmost point of the peninsula, by motorbike. From this point the underwater ridge that connects Kamchatka with Alaska begins.
