Between Alaska and Kamchatka
Bering Island
Between Alaska and Kamchatka
The turquoise water of the ocean rolled waves onto the sandy shore. Thousands of birds screamed on the rocks. The wind swept over the brightly coloured hilly tundra. Black seals lounged on the shore. Dark brown Arctic foxes occasionally ran between the seals in search of food. That clear September day was the first time I saw Bering Island in the North Pacific Ocean between Kamchatka and Alaska.
Bering Island is named in honour of navigator Vitus Bering. Bering died on this island during a forced wintering on a sea expedition in the North Pacific Ocean. I dreamed not only of seeing the amazing nature of the island, but also of getting to the navigator's grave on my motorbike.
Travelling by motorbike on the mountainous island is only possible along the shore at low tide. At this time you can see many marine animals and birds on the beaches. The island is home to one of the largest concentrations of harbour seals in the world.
